Counselling for trauma

Trauma is an ongoing emotional response to an event, or a series of events, that we have experienced.

Experiencing trauma symptoms in the present day – flashbacks, numbed or out of control emotions, and suicidal feelings, for instance – can shatter our sense of who we are, leaving us feeling scared, frustrated, and confused.

These feelings can make the thought of speaking with a counsellor overwhelming, and I offer open-ended sessions to alleviate some of the pressure that can sometimes be felt in time-limited counselling. I understand that it takes time to build trust, particularly if you’re coming to counselling with something you’ve never spoken about before.

It feels important to say here, that you never need to tell me what happened. We don’t need to go there, to process trauma. I take a proactive role in trauma counselling: I can help you understand what is happening so you can take control. We can work together to make overwhelming trauma symptoms manageable. I’ll help you notice your inner resources so you can believe in them too.

I’ve undertaken a lot of additional training to enable me to work in a trauma-informed way, and currently work as a sessional counsellor in two charities supporting people who’ve experienced sexual violence alongside my private practice. I've also worked with many clients who’ve experienced childhood abuse in its various forms.
